Egyptomania Exhibition Opens at Hermitage Supported by Rosneft

28 October 2022

Rosneft is the general sponsor of the Egyptomania exhibition, which opened at the State Hermitage Museum. The exhibition marks the 200th anniversary of the deciphering of Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs by Jean-François Champollion and the birth of the Egyptian art style, which embraced architecture, painting, philosophy, literature, theatre and cinema.

Rosneft traditionally supports large-scale cultural projects. Previously, the Rafael Line exhibition, dedicated to the phenomenon of Raphael Santi, and the Piero della Francesca, Monarch of Painting exhibition, bringing together works by one of the most famous masters of the 15th century, held at the Hermitage with the Company’s participation, were a great success. Thanks to Rosneft, the museum also has a permanent collection entitled Antique Colonisation of the Northern Black Sea Region.

Egyptomania opened in the two ceremonial halls of the Winter Palace’s Nevsky Enfilade – the Nikolayevsky and the Anteroom. The exhibition features over 700 Egyptian-style monuments: sculpture, paintings on subjects from the ancient Egypt history and biblical themes, as well as furniture, stone and jewellery art, costumes, and porcelain goods. Among the main exhibits is the famous Egyptian service depicting ancient monuments, which Napoleon gave to Alexander I after the Treaties of Tilsit. And along with paintings dedicated to the popular subject of Queen Cleopatra, an Egyptian statue of Cleopatra VII, created in the 51st-30th B.C., is also exhibited.

A separate section is devoted to the history of Egyptology in Russia and the influence of Egyptian art on the image of St Petersburg, Russia’s most «Egyptian» city. Many of the engravings, drawings and vintage photographs presented to the public for the first time.

In addition to items from the Hermitage, the exhibition includes items from the State Russian Museum, the Russian National Library, the State Museum of Urban Sculpture, the Museum of Theatre and Music Art and others. The exhibition will be open until 9 April 2023.
